2014 Race the Wrock
May 7, 2014 By Christopher Moore
The Root 66 Race Series came to West Rock Park in Hamden this past Saturday for “Race the Wrock”, the fourth event of the 2014 series. Though it’s still early May the cross country race series is now in full stride with only one Connecticut event remaining in Winsted on May 18th.
This past weekend’s race was dramatically different than the first two Connecticut races. Gone were the flat, fast, dry, smooth single and double track trails that characterized the previous courses in Middlebury and Farmington. Instead, Saturday’s West Rock course consisted of four distinct elements: technical rocky single track, paved road climbs, wide straight double track and, most notably, long stretches of deep slippery mud. Due to the amount of it, the mud overshadowed all other aspects of the course. Heavy rains in the days prior to the event had turned what would have been classic New England single track into standing water and bogs of mud. “Man, that’s a lot mud” repeated almost every racer when asked their thoughts on the course.
Regardless of the conditions racers in all categories appeared unconcerned at the starting line and charged off into the woods with their usual enthusiasm. That didn’t last long though, by half way through their first lap it was clear from the looks on most riders’ mud caked faces that dealing with the course was now their primary concern and racing one another had become an afterthought.
In addition to being more technically challenging the previous Connecticut events Saturday’s course was also two miles longer. This meant longer race times and large gaps between riders by the time they reached the finish. In the men’s Category one race only a few riders were able to complete three laps in under two hours.
Total participation on Saturday was roughly 200, down from about 400 at the previous week’s event at Winding Trails in Farmington. Race the Wrock was a new event in 2014, put together to replace the former “Wrath of the Boneyard” event in Meriden which fell victim to permitting issues this year. A Saturday date and competition from another race taking place the following day in Rhode Island were other possible contributors to the lower turnout.
